Thermal Hazard Technology (THT) is the leading supplier of calorimeters and testing services for lithium battery safety / performance. With increasing energy density, safety of Li-ion batteries is becoming increasingly important. Calorimetry is used to obtain quantitative data on the thermal behaviour of batteries. THT’s Accelerating Rate Calorimeter provides an adiabatic testing environment with tests typically leading to full thermal runaway. Batteries can be studied under either normal or abuse conditions. This information can be used to aid design of battery management/safety systems.
Combining the ARC with a battery cycler, the thermal response of Li-ion batteries during charge/discharge under adiabatic conditions can be used to quantify battery heat production and calculate efficiency.
The range of abuse tests performed under adiabatic conditions include:
Electrical abuse in the form of short circuit, over-charge or over-discharge.
Mechanical abuse by nail penetration or crushing.
Thermal abuse via Heat-Wait-Seek (HWS), ramp heating or hotbox.
As well as thermal data, pressure measurement and gas analysis are also available for the range of tests listed above. Our new EVx calorimeter has a chamber size of 25cm diameter by 70cm height and can accommodate cells up to 150Ah. The industry-leading EV+ calorimeter has a 40cm diameter and 44cm height.
In addition to complete cells, battery components can also be tested in order to develop chemistries that optimise specific power requirements and increase their inherent safety.
