S3 Process and Pink GmbH Thermosysteme win contract to supply Britishvolt for new Gigaplant

Global German engineering company Pink GmbH Thermosysteme, together with their UK agent S3 Process Ltd, have won a multi-million Euro order to supply vacuum drying ovens to Britishvolt’s first full-scale Gigafactory in Northumberland, UK.

Britishvolt a battery technology pioneer, leading the UK’s investment in battery cell technology and associated R&D.  Its £3.8 billion Gigaplant in Northumberland is one of the largest ever industrial investments in the UK and will be used to produce enough low carbon, sustainable battery cells each year for well over 300,000 electric vehicle battery packs.

Pink’s involvement in the project will be to deliver 30 vacuum drying ovens for installation at the Northumberland site, as well as the recently announced scale-up facility at Hams Hall in the West Midlands. The drying ovens are used for drying the key components to be assembled into the battery cells.

Duncan Betteley, Director at S3 Process commented,

“We are immensely proud to have supported our equipment partner Pink GmbH Thermosysteme in their selection as one of the key equipment suppliers to Britishvolt, and to be involved in this exciting journey to propel the UK’s energy transition on the road to zero.

“We were able to demonstrate that Pink’s batch based semi-continuous drying solution allows for maximum drying throughput whilst providing Britishvolt with the flexibility and agility that they were looking for to meet their customer’s demands.”

Timon Orlob, Global Chief Operating Officer, Britishvolt explains why Pink were the right partner choice.

“Britishvolt is a clean technology leader in the lithium-ion battery cell development and advanced manufacturing industry. The performance of a battery cell is closely linked to how it is made. Therefore, we require high quality and efficient equipment to deliver our performance cells.

“These selections are aligned to our potential customers, and all parties clearly understanding latest trends and market requirements. As such, these are the right, and responsible, partners for our initial production equipment. Innovative, as well as artificial intelligence-supported, manufacturing equipment will become a core part of our operational strategy.

“That allows us to realise the full potential of our premier Gigasite in Northumberland, creating production efficiencies and resulting in lowered operating costs and energy consumption. This leads to truly sustainable, low carbon cell production. To be successful, choosing the right partners is critical and I believe we have found that in this strategic partnership.”

Pink will be exhibiting on stand 17-636, at the Battery Cells and System Expo at the NEC in Birmingham on June 29th and 30th, 2022.
