What Battery Technology does your company specialise in?
Fike manufactures industrial safety products that protect people and organizations. Our solutions address lithium battery thermal management problems in Energy Storage Systems. Using internal product development, scientific research and testing and validation capabilities, Fike develops application-specific solutions consistent with or exceeding the world’s standards and regulations.
Please explain the key benefits of your company’s speciality.
As manufactures in Fire Protection, Explosion Protection and Energy Storage protection Fike are uniquely positioned to offer a multi layered protection approach to protect Energy Storage Systems.
In 2023, Fike Blue became the first third-party tested solution proven and patented to stop cascading thermal runaway, an unpredictable and extremely dangerous fire hazard that occurs within the lithium battery cells held in energy storage systems. Fike Blue is a liquid agent that completely fills a battery module, submerses the malfunctioning battery cells, and absorbs the intense exothermic heat without breaking down because of its boiling point of more than 400°C. The thermal runaway suppressant uses less liquid than the water required by sprinklers or fire fighters, resulting in less runoff into the surrounding environment.
Are there any exciting developments happening within the industry or your company that you can share?
We currently have multiple projects underway for new product development but one of the most interesting areas we are currently exploring is the further development of our Fire Solutions Group that will be looking at high hazard and specialist risk applications within the renewable energy and manufacturing sectors, along with this is a project to enhance our in house test capabilities, building upon our existing explosion testing facility we are currently adding a new battery testing facility and enhancing our fire testing capabilities.
What is one thing you would like attendees to know about your company?
To mitigate the effects of thermal runaway within a Battery Energy Storage System, Fike offers several layers of protection, each of which may be required to ensure the safety of nearby people, first responders and the environment. It often starts with our BESS consultancy offerings, which are designed to provide comprehensive safety evaluations, compliance guidance and risk mitigation strategies for BESS installations. Our team of experts assists clients in navigating the complexities of industry standards such as NFPA 855 and UL 9540A. We work closely with regulatory authorities, project stakeholders and industry professionals to ensure the safety, efficiency and compliance of a BESS. During a formal Fike Battery Hazard Analysis (BHA) our team validates the protection approach using Fike Blue as the thermal management solution and/or any other identified protection methods, including early warning gas detection systems, explosion control and exhaust venting systems, and more. As part of this process, Fike also offers:
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD): Which is used to accurately simulate the propagation of pressure and flames to design and allow optimization of the explosion protection concept for your ESS.
- Vessel Strength Analysis: Which determines the explosion pressure resistance of your ESS which is at risk. This information is required in the system design of venting, suppression and isolation explosion protection systems.
- Protection Strategy Development: Risk-reduction actions and investments to make that aligns with your budgetary, production and logistical requirements
