Advanced Battery Cooling from SPAL

SPAL Automotive UK is making its first appearance at Battery Cells & Systems Expo, the meeting place for automotive manufacturers, electric utilities, battery system integrators and cell manufacturers; to showcase its latest range of high-performance fans, blowers and coolant pumps specifically designed to meet the demands of battery thermal management.

SPAL’s brushless DC low voltage fans available in 12V, 24V and the new higher voltage 48V version, range from 50W up to 2kW offering state-of-the-art cooling.  In EV applications the fans complement liquid cooling systems by enhancing the efficiency of heat dissipation from the battery pack. In a liquid cooling system, coolant absorbs heat from the battery cells, and then a fan blows air over the heat exchanger, facilitating the transfer of heat from the coolant to the surrounding air.

SPAL’s brushless DC coolant pumps, currently available in 12V and 24V, and shortly in 48V, introduce further thermal efficiency into the system as they have the facility to allow additional control of the coolant rate to manage and maintain what is a narrow temperature range. This enables the pumps to ensure maximum battery thermal protection and therefore overall performance.

SPAL’s brushless products are equipped with fully sealed drive units meeting IP6K9K specifications, with a metal housing resistant to corrosion and water ingress.  Smart controlled, with CAN, PWM and LIN versions available as well as an HVIL option; the built-in diagnostic and safety features enable the fans and pumps to maintain performance in challenging environmental conditions, while delivering up to 40,000 hours of operation.
