Exhibitor Spotlight: Busch

What Battery Technology do you specialise in?

Busch Vacuum Solutions offer a wide range of vacuum technologies perfectly suited for all vacuum related stages of battery production, from single vacuum pumps to full scale systems.

Please explain the benefits of your speciality.

In many cases Vacuum processes are a necessity for the production of battery cells and assembly. Some of the main applications include:

  • Slurry Mixing – Removal of air pockets and voids, enabling higher uniformity and leading to improved cell capacity.
  • Vacuum Drying – Drying under vacuum guarantees a minimum residual moisture and removal of solvents, such as N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP)
  • Electrolyte Filling / Impregnating – Homogeneous distribution of electrolyte increases the quality and lifetime of the cell
  • Degassing – During the degassing stage (preventing entrapment of micro-bubbles in the electrolyte)

Busch also offer established and comprehensive vacuum service solutions throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and the USA, with a network of Busch service engineers providing on-site support to our customers 24/7.

What do you believe to be the most important trend in Battery Technology and what is your company doing to contributing towards this?

Busch continue to develop vacuum pumps to ensure that they meet the changing demands of the industry in all process steps, such as lower power consumption and footprint considerations, as real estate becomes more valuable within the Gigafactories and Pilot facilities.

The trend that we are experiencing is in ways to reduce the cost of manufacturing which has a direct impact of the cost of manufactured goods. Busch have addressed this by introduction of reliable and robust Dry Vacuum Pumps and systems, which increase the time between service, thus reducing downtime of production tools. Busch also offer overhauls of our products locally in order that turn times of serviced product are kept to a minimum. In addition, the Busch R5 RD range of oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps are 30% more energy efficient than comparable rotary vane vacuum pumps, reducing energy costs.

If attendees should know one thing about your company and experience, what would it be?

Busch Vacuum Solutions are operated at major lithium-ion battery production sites the world over and are renowned for their reliability in all stages of lithium-ion battery production.

What has been your organisation’s biggest achievement in date?

Busch major achievements to date are with the large vacuum solution installations at Asian Gigafactories for production and solvent recovery applications, which presently account for the major share of battery production. This has additionally increased our footprint in the USA and European markets as battery manufacturers seek to produce products in localised markets. Busch were selected due to the innovative solutions and support offered, which reduced capital and operational costs. In addition, Busch are working closely with new battery technology companies in the next generation of batteries.

What will you be showcasing on your stand at The Battery Cells & Systems Expo?

Vacuum pumps best suited for battery production processes will be showcased on our stand:

The COBRA NX dry screw vacuum pump, with low maintenance costs and high pumping speeds for increased productivity.

The R5 RD oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump, the new benchmark of rotary vane technology, 30% more energy efficient than comparable rotary vane vacuum pumps.

Who are you hoping to meet at The Battery Cells & Systems Expo?

We look forward to meeting professionals and production management from across the lithium-ion battery market.
